Welcome to
Ruaha National Park
Ruaha is Tanzania's second-largest national park and one of Africa's last true predator strongholds — a rugged, baobab-studded wilderness where lion prides hunt buffalo in the open and elephant herds cross sand rivers at dusk. Mufindi builds every Ruaha itinerary around its dry-season drama.
Ruaha Is Lion Country, First and Foremost
This is one of the most important predator landscapes left on Earth. Here's what defines it:
-
An Estimated 10% of Africa's Lions: Ruaha and its surrounds hold some of the largest lion prides ever recorded — some big enough to bring down giraffe.
-
Roughly 10,000 Elephants: Herds move through the park's baobab groves and sand rivers throughout the year, among the largest populations in East Africa.
-
A Crossroads of Two Ecosystems: Ruaha sits where East African acacia country meets southern miombo woodland, so you'll find species — like both greater and lesser kudu — rarely seen together elsewhere.
-
A Refuge for the Rare: Ruaha holds one of Africa's healthiest populations of endangered African wild dog, alongside strong cheetah and leopard numbers.
Where the Great Ruaha River Takes You
The river is this park's beating heart, and our guides plan every day around it:
The Riverbanks in Dry Season: Where shrinking pools concentrate elephant, hippo, and crocodile into unforgettable, close-range viewing.
The Baobab Plains: Ancient, sculptural trees that turn every game drive into a landscape photograph as much as a wildlife one.
Rocky Kopjes & Escarpments: Favoured lookout points for leopard and a dramatic backdrop for sundowners.
The Mwagusi River Beds: Made famous by wildlife documentaries, and one of our guides' preferred routes for tracking resident prides.

Mufindi Knows Where the Sightings Are
Ruaha rewards local knowledge — here's what we bring to your trip:
-
Guides Who Track the Prides: Our driver-guides know the resident lion territories and follow their movements season to season.
-
Flexible Access, Your Way: We arrange both light-aircraft transfers and overland routes, depending on your time and budget.
-
Private Vehicles, No Crowding: Every game drive is exclusive to your party — Ruaha's low visitor numbers mean you're rarely sharing a sighting.
A Wildness That Rearranges How You See Things
Ruaha doesn't ease travelers in gently, and that's exactly what tends to stay with them. It's watching a lion pride cross open ground utterly unbothered by your presence, or the particular gold the baobab bark turns in the last light of the day — a colour no photograph quite manages to hold onto. Somewhere around day three, most guests notice they've stopped reaching for their phone without meaning to, and start noticing smaller things instead: the shape of a track in the sand, the specific alarm call of a francolin, the way a herd of elephant seems to move as a single organism rather than a collection of individuals.
People leave Ruaha oddly recalibrated. They're less impressed by scale and grand statistics than they expected to be, and far more moved by how little of this wilderness actually needs them in it to keep working exactly as it always has, long before any vehicle arrived and long after it's gone.
