Welcome to
Mikumi National Park
Mikumi is Tanzania's most accessible major park — a sweeping, open floodplain reachable by sealed road in a single morning, yet rich enough in wildlife to rival parks that take days to reach. Mufindi uses Mikumi as the perfect gateway into the Southern Circuit.
Big Wildlife Doesn't Require a Long Journey Here
Mikumi proves that easy access and real safari quality aren't mutually exclusive:
-
A Sealed Road the Whole Way: Mikumi sits directly on the Tanzania–Zambia Highway, making it the single easiest major park to reach from Dar es Salaam.
-
The "Mini-Serengeti" Comparison Is Earned: The open Mkata Floodplain draws the same visual comparison as East Africa's most famous plains — without the crowds.
-
Connected to a 75,000 km² Ecosystem: Mikumi links directly to the Nyerere ecosystem, so wildlife moves freely between the two, keeping populations healthy and visible.
-
A Specialist for Rare Antelope: Mikumi is one of Tanzania's most reliable spots for eland, the world's largest antelope, plus sable and greater kudu.
Four Stops on a Classic Mikumi Game Drive
Our guides build every Mikumi day around these core locations:
-
The Mkata Floodplain: The open, grassy heart of the park, where giraffe, zebra, buffalo, and elephant move across the horizon in full view.
-
The Hippo Pools: A noisy, close-range stop near the main gate where resident pods wallow just metres from the vehicle.
-
Vuma Hill: A rise above the plains offering sweeping views back across the floodplain — a favourite sundowner spot.
-
The Miombo Woodland Fringe: Home to sable and kudu, and a quieter contrast to the open plains at the heart of the park.

Mufindi Makes Mikumi Effortless
Ruaha rewards local knowledge — here's what we bring to your trip:
-
Guides Who Track the Prides: Our driver-guides know the resident lion territories and follow their movements season to season.
-
Flexible Access, Your Way: We arrange both light-aircraft transfers and overland routes, depending on your time and budget.
-
Private Vehicles, No Crowding: Every game drive is exclusive to your party — Ruaha's low visitor numbers mean you're rarely sharing a sighting.
Proof That Wonder Doesn't Need Distance
Mikumi surprises people precisely because it asks so little of them to get there. Fog lifts off the Mkata Floodplain at sunrise to reveal a horizon full of animals that were invisible minutes before, and there's a particular thrill in realizing this is still wild, still unmistakably Tanzania, only three hours from where you woke up that same morning. There's something almost disorienting about watching an elephant herd cross in near-silence while, somewhere behind you, the highway that brought you here is still faintly visible on the horizon.
Most guests arrive expecting Mikumi to feel like a warm-up before the "real" safari begins elsewhere. Almost all of them leave surprised by how much of it they still find themselves thinking about, long after the trip has moved on to somewhere further away — the fog, the giraffe against the morning light, the sense that wildness doesn't require distance to feel real.
